FFXIV gil per hour, realistically

Quick answer: Casual active methods pay roughly 200k–700k gil/hour; skilled crafting and flipping can hit 1–5M/hour with capital and know-how; passive retainer ventures add a few million per week for a minute or two a day. But every number is a snapshot — your real rate depends on your server, gear, and how fresh the patch is. Measure your own.

Updated September 2026

"How much gil per hour?" is the most-asked and most-mis-answered question in gil making. The honest answer is it depends — but that's not useful, so here are realistic ranges, what moves them, and, more importantly, how to find your number instead of trusting a stranger's screenshot.

Realistic ranges by method

Treat these as ballparks for a reasonably geared player, not promises. They shift with your world's prices and the patch cycle (see below).

MethodRough gil/hourNotes
Expert crafting + flipping1–5MNeeds melds, capital, market knowledge. The ceiling.
Treasure map chains1–2MPortal dungeons are the real payday; better in a group.
Unsynced old trials/raids0.5–1.5MMounts, minions, materials; per-clear, solo-able.
Gathering (fresh patch)0.5–2MHighest right after new nodes drop, before supply floods.
Hunts (A/S marks)0.4–0.7MSpikes at reset; also tomes and materials.
Bozja / FATE farming0.2–0.5MSteady, low-attention, doubles as other rewards.
Retainer ventures (passive)~2–3M/weekMinutes a day, not per hour — pure background income.

What actually moves your number

Gil/hour is a snapshot, not a constant. Any single figure was measured on one server, at one point in the patch, with one player's gear. That's why guides disagree — they're all right, for their own conditions. The only rate that matters is the one you can reproduce.

How to find YOUR gil per hour

Instead of trusting a table, price the methods against your own world and time yourself:

  1. Pick your world in XIV Profitability and open the tool for a method you're considering — crafting, gathering, duty drops, or flips.
  2. The tool shows live profit and sales-per-day per item, so you can see what a run is worth on your server before you commit an hour to it.
  3. Do one timed run, tally what you cleared after tax, and you have a real number for your world today. Compare methods on that basis.

It also pays to skim the Weekly Market Pulse first — our market report, refreshed every week, flags which items and methods are paying unusually well right now, so you time your session for a strong week instead of a flat one.

For the full method-by-method breakdown of how each one works, see how to make gil (every method, ranked). This guide is about the rate; that one is about the how.

FAQ

What's the single best gil/hour method?

Expert crafting plus flipping, for raw throughput — but only once you've invested in melds and capital. Until then, maps, unsynced trials, and gathering a fresh patch are the accessible highs.

Is passive income "worth less" because the hourly rate is lower?

No — retainer ventures cost you a minute or two a day, so their effective hourly rate is enormous even though the weekly total looks modest. For most players it's the best gil-per-effort in the game.

Why can't you just give me one number?

Because it would be wrong for your server the day you read it. The ranges above plus a live tool get you a real figure; a single hard number would just be someone else's snapshot.
