Quick answer: Crafting leves can pay gil, but the scarce resource is leve allowances, not gil — you regenerate only a limited number. So aim for the most gil (or EXP) per allowance, usually via HQ turn-ins. Often just crafting items to sell beats leves for pure gil; leves shine when you want gil and EXP together.
Levequests get talked about as a levelling tool and priced as a gil tool, and both framings miss the point. A leve is a trade: you hand over materials and one allowance, and you get back experience and a small pile of gil. Whether that's a good trade depends almost entirely on what the materials cost you today — which is a market-board question.
Gil you can earn more of. Allowances regenerate slowly and stop accumulating at the cap, so every one you spend badly is gone and every one you let overflow is wasted outright. That makes the number worth optimising:
Not gil per leve. Not experience per hour. Per allowance — because that's the input you can't get more of by playing better.
Direct gil rewards on crafting leves range from double digits to a few thousand. Even the best of them won't out-earn an hour of decent flipping. Anyone telling you leves are a gil farm is selling you something.
What leves genuinely are is the cheapest route to a high-level crafter, and a high-level crafter is where the real gil is. The right way to value them is as a levelling cost you're trying to minimise: if a leve's materials cost 2,000 gil and it delivers a chunk of a level, you're buying levels at a known price. Compare that against levelling by crafting sellable goods, which is slower per level but can turn a profit instead of a loss.
Our Crafting Leves tool covers 1,120 crafting levequests — 140 for each of the eight Disciples of the Hand, spanning levels 1 to 98. For each one it prices the turn-in item against your world's live market board and ranks by experience per gil spent and by direct gil profit, so the "which of these is cheap right now" question answers itself.
One practical note: leve hubs cluster heavily in a few cities, so a levelling run is usually cheaper in travel than it looks — check which issuer covers the level band you need before flying around.
