Coming back to FFXIV? Rebuild your gil

Quick answer: Don't grind from zero. First, sell what you already own — old materials, glamour, minions, and materia sitting on your retainers are often worth more now than when you stored them. Then restart retainer ventures for passive income while you catch up on the story, and make gil from the content you're already running to get current.

Updated September 2026

Logging back in after months (or years) away, your gil total can feel embarrassing next to today's prices. Good news: returning players have a head start new players don't — a full inventory and established retainers. Your fastest gil isn't grinding something new; it's cashing in what past-you left behind, then restarting the passive engines while you get current.

Step 1 — Liquidate your attic

Before anything else, go through your retainers, saddlebag, and inventory. Players routinely find:

The key move: price each stack against your world's live market before you sell or vendor it. A quick search on XIV Profitability (or the item search) tells you what's actually worth listing versus what to dump — so you don't accidentally vendor a 40k item.

Combat gear is the exception. Old-tier combat gear is usually worthless now — but the materials, glamour, and collectibles around it often aren't. Don't let "my gear is outdated" make you sell everything to an NPC.

Step 2 — Restart the passive engines

While you re-learn your rotation and grind the Main Scenario, your gil should be growing on its own:

Step 3 — Earn from what you're already doing

You're going to be running dungeons, roulettes, and MSQ to get current anyway — make that time pay:

Step 4 — Then decide if you want a real gil engine

Once your wallet is breathing again, if you enjoyed making gil before, pick one repeatable method and lean in — crafting for profit, flipping, or working the market board sweet spot. But that's optional. Many returning players are comfortable just from steps 1–3.

FAQ

I have almost no gil — where do I even start?

Your inventory, not the market. Sell your old stored mats, glamour, and collectibles first; that alone usually funds your comeback. Then restart retainer ventures.

Has the market changed a lot while I was gone?

Prices and demand shift every patch, and per world — which is exactly why you should check live numbers rather than relying on what things "used to" sell for. A tool that shows current per-world prices saves you from selling at old, wrong values.

Should I re-level a crafter to make gil?

Only if you want to. It's the long game and a gil sink up front. For a fast comeback, liquidation plus passive ventures plus duty drops needs no crafting at all — see gil without crafting.
