Quick answer: Island Sanctuary earns gil indirectly: you gather and produce on your island, run workshops to make handicrafts, and sell the resulting items or surplus materials on the market board. The best gil comes from optimizing workshop schedules for high-demand handicrafts. It's low-pressure, mostly-passive income once your island is set up.
Island Sanctuary doesn't pay gil. It pays Seafarer's Cowries (and a lesser Islander's Cowries), neither of which can be listed on the market board. The gil comes from a second step almost nobody explains clearly: you spend Cowries on tradeable goods at the Horrendous Hoarder, in your Cozy Cabin, and sell those goods like anything else. Get that second step right and the island runs as close to free passive income as the game offers.
Your workshops turn island materials into handicrafts on a schedule, following production orders that reward high-popularity, low-supply goods with bonus output. Deliver enough and Cowries accumulate on their own, with no attention required beyond checking in once or twice a day. Spend those Cowries at the Horrendous Hoarder on the entries that are actually tradeable — materia and select furnishings and minions — and resell them on the board. Everything else the vendor offers (exclusive wares, most equipment) is untradeable and only worth buying for your own use.
Up to four workshops can run at once, each producing handicrafts on 4-, 6-, or 8-hour timers from materials grown in your garden or bred in your pasture. The only daily decision that matters is which products to set them to: the game tells you each product's current supply and popularity, and setting a workshop to something with low supply and high popularity pays a real output bonus over an ignored default. Checking that list once a day and adjusting is most of the skill involved — there's no real-time management beyond it.
Once your sanctuary reaches rank 19 and you've completed your island's "vision," a second reward track unlocks: Felicitous Favors. Delivering the specific products it calls for earns Felicitous Tokens, capped at 70 per week, which buy their own separate set of rewards on top of whatever your workshops are already producing. It's a genuine income bump for anyone who's kept the island running long enough to reach it, not a separate system to grind for on its own.
The Horrendous Hoarder runs several shops off the same Cowrie balance — materia and items, equipment and furnishings, and exclusive wares. Most of that stock is untradeable, bought only because a player wants it for themselves. The gil comes specifically from the entries that are tradeable: materia in particular, plus a rotating handful of furnishings and minions. Which of those actually sell for a good price is a live, per-world question — check the board before committing Cowries, the same as any other conversion.
Materia is worth calling out on its own: it's one of the steadiest tradeable outputs of the island, and the same demand logic applies as any other materia you'd get from spiritbonding — higher grades in current-tier stats sell, low grades mostly don't.
Treated as an active job, Island Sanctuary is a poor use of time — the gil per hour of attention is low next to crafting or flipping. Treated as background income that runs itself, estimates for consistent, reasonably optimized play land in roughly the low hundreds of thousands of gil per week, varying with how much of that Cowrie income actually converts to goods your world wants to buy. It won't replace your main income method. It's closer to a savings account that pays out while you're not looking at it, which is a different kind of valuable.
Put this into practice with live market-board prices for your world:
